Thoughts about What Is Coming

Wasn’t it Mark Twain who quipped, “The art of prophecy is very difficult, especially with respect to the future”? It certainly can be difficult from a human perspective. For the Christian, however, he/she is commanded to take heart. Why? Here are a few reasons:

  1. God is sovereign over human affairs (Ephesians 1:19-22).
  2. Tumult can be used to return a people to God (Genesis 50:19-21).
  3. God humbles the proud and gives grace to the humble (James 4:6).
  4. To reveal the failures of secularism (Psalm 2).

I do not know what the result of this election will be, if it is any way free or fair, or if there is any integrity left in the system at all. I admit to significant skepticism. My family and I have voted, and we have prayed, and we know where we stand. We trust the Lord. Come what will, our ultimate allegiance is to God, and we pray we would be good citizens who reflect righteousness rather than chaos.

  1. I was reading in Hebrews last night and was reminded that we are heirs to a “kingdom that cannot be shaken”(Hebrews 12:28a, ESV). What we have here on earth is the stuff of earthquakes, but our eternity remains stable and immovable. The caveat is that we thus “offer to God acceptable worship” (Hebrews 12:28b) So we stand firm in our faith and offer ourselves as “living sacrifices, holy and acceptable to God (Romans 12:1). Regardless of the outcome of the election, that is our course of action. To quote out of context a mutual friend, “Here I stand, I can do no other. God help me.”

  2. I am old so I have endured several scary elections where everyone predicted doom for our country. I remember as a teen listening to everyone say we were doomed to WWIII if Kennedy beat Nixon. He did and we didn’t die. We made it through the Cuban missile crisis under his leadership and we didn’t die. I voted and I pray for Tuesday. Quinton’s sermon was spot on. I was reminded that Wednesday and forward is as important prayer wise as is Tuesday. I was reminded God has us and I have to pray and then let him have it. One outcome will be hard to take but I will be called to pray for all those voted into leadership positions. That is when the rubber hits the road of our faith. To pray for someone we don’t like or trust and trust God to prevail and continue to hold us close. Thank you for your leadership, strength and unwavering faith. Prayers for you as you prepare a message for us following the election results. Have a blessed week and in Pirtle words…. Press on

  3. Jon,

I think to follow your four points to their end, ought to lead us to repentance.

Not to be a gainsayer, for all who are in Christ should stand firm on what has been said above – but I find that we want fervently for our lives to be without obligation, that they should be ones of ease. But scripturally, that doesn’t fly!

We are loud in voicing our complaints! Culturally influenced beyond looking Christ like. And profoundly stumped at what’s going on.

Encourage eachother in the LORD –

But admonish eachother in the LORD as well!

    David
